I was curious about how large the scarecrow’s effective range actually looks in Stardew Valley, so I took a screenshot to find out.

Explanation of Scarecrow Range

Here’s the scarecrow’s effective range as seen in the actual game screen.
The area marked with hoeing and the spots where parsnips are planted are within the scarecrow’s protection range.
Although the description says its range has a “radius of 8,” which might make you imagine a circular area, it’s actually shaped like an octagon.

Here’s what the lower part, which was hidden behind the UI, looks like.

To explain the range in detail:
- From the scarecrow at the center, the straight-line distance to the parsnip tiles is 8 tiles.
- From those parsnip tiles, there is a horizontal effective range of 4 tiles in each direction.
- The diagonal parts form a zig-zag pattern made of single-tile steps.
Efficient Way to Measure the Effective Range

If you want to measure tiles accurately, it’s recommended to hoe the soil with one-tile gaps, like in the screenshot. This makes it easy to count the exact number of tiles. When I started using this method while writing this article, the measurement process became much more efficient.
It may seem tedious, but since Stardew Valley’s UI doesn’t display a grid, this primitive method actually proved to be the most effective.
with Mods
On PC, you can also use mods to display the scarecrow’s effective range.
