This article covers everything currently known about combat in The Blood of Dawnwalker ahead of its release.

Official announcements are treated as the primary sources, followed by information reported in hands-on previews.

Once the game is released, this article will be corrected, updated, and expanded based on firsthand gameplay.

Two Combat Options: Omniattack/Omniblock and Directional Combat

The Blood of Dawnwalker offers both streamlined combat controls through Omniattack and Omniblock and a more involved Directional Combat system that allows players to manually select attack and block directions.

Omniattack and Omniblock make combat easier to control. Directional Combat requires more input, but players who master it will be able to defeat enemies more efficiently.

How Streamlined Combat Works

Hands-on previews have confirmed the following mechanics:

  • Omniattack is less stamina-efficient than manually selecting an attack direction.
  • Omniblock can defend against attacks from any direction, but consumes stamina.

How Directional Combat Works

Both the player and enemies can attack from four directions: above, below, left, and right.

When an enemy prepares to attack, the incoming direction is displayed in advance. By positioning your weapon in the corresponding direction and blocking at the right moment, you can successfully parry the attack.

A successful parry creates an opportunity to counterattack.

Players must also select a direction when attacking. Repeatedly attacking from the same direction makes it easier for enemies to block your strikes.

Unblockable Attacks

Certain enemies can perform unblockable attacks.

Hands-on previews have reported that a red skull icon appears before an enemy uses an unblockable attack.

Activation Charges and Active Abilities

Successfully attacking, blocking, and parrying builds up Activation Charges.

These charges can then be spent to activate Active Abilities.

The developers have explained that Active Abilities include offensive attacks, healing abilities, crowd-control effects, and other options.

According to hands-on previews, Active Abilities are equipped in slots, and additional locked slots were also visible in the preview build.

Daytime Combat: Swords and Witchcraft

During the day, Coen is in his human form and fights using swords and Witchcraft.

Witchcraft is performed through runes carved into Coen’s body. At night, these wounds close, preventing him from using Witchcraft.

Hands-on previews have shown spells that directly damage enemies, temporarily incapacitate them by throwing sand, and extract information from the dead.

Nighttime Combat: Swords, Claws, and Vampiric Abilities

At night, Coen assumes his vampiric form and can use claws and vampiric abilities in addition to swords.

By drinking the blood of certain vampires, Coen can acquire abilities unique to them.

Melee-Focused Combat

Ranged attacks are not intended to serve as Coen’s primary means of fighting. Combat is instead designed primarily around close-range encounters.

Magic and vampiric abilities are positioned as tools for closing the distance and bringing enemies into melee range. (THE BLOOD OF DAWNWALKER – Gameplay Reveal Recap | Bandai Namco Europe)

Weapon Types

Although swords are Coen’s primary weapons, official screenshots have also shown him wielding an axe.

However, Coen cannot use bows or crossbows because he was never trained in archery.

Skill Tree Progression

Three skill-tree categories have currently been confirmed:

  • Swordmastery: Weapon-based combat available during both day and night
  • Witchcraft: Magic available to Coen in his daytime human form
  • Vampirism: Vampiric abilities available at night

Swordmastery and Witchcraft skills can be unlocked by finding and reading books.

Vampiric abilities are unlocked by drinking specific types of blood.

Some skills require in-game time to learn. This means players must decide how much of the limited time available to save Coen’s family should be spent improving his combat abilities.

Difficulty Settings

At lower difficulty settings, enemy attack animations can be slowed down. At higher difficulty settings, the UI indicators showing incoming attack directions are disabled, requiring players to read the enemies’ movements themselves.

The official explanation states:

“At easier difficulties, animations can be slowed down to give players more time to see and react to enemy attacks, it’s not simply a matter of having more health and doing more damage, which helps maintain excitement and a sense of mastery.”

In other words, the difficulty settings do more than simply adjust health and damage values. They also change how much time players have to read and react to enemy attacks, helping preserve both the excitement of combat and the feeling of mastering its systems.

If The Blood of Dawnwalker Is Your Kind of RPG

If you are drawn to The Blood of Dawnwalker for its medieval Eastern European dark fantasy, morally gray quests, and emphasis on player choice, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the most natural recommendation.

Dawnwalker director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz also directed The Witcher 3, while several other members of Rebel Wolves previously worked on the game. The connection runs deeper than a shared setting: The Witcher 3 regularly confronts players with flawed choices, consequences that are not immediately apparent, and quests with no cleanly correct outcome.

The two games have different worlds and combat systems, but The Witcher 3 remains the clearest way to experience the RPG design lineage behind The Blood of Dawnwalker.
