Overview
When a fang from a Vrakhiri pierces the flesh of a canine animal, it mutates into a Psoglav—a creature resembling a diseased wolf that hunts prey driven solely by bloodlust and instinct.
The developers have also explained that while the Psoglav is a monster drawn from folklore, in the world of The Blood of Dawnwalker it has been reinterpreted as a dog corrupted by vampiric traits.
Psoglav in Folklore
A study analyzing Croatian folkloric sources describes the typical pasoglavci as having the following characteristics:
- A human body with a dog’s head
- A single eye in the center of the forehead
- In some variants, four legs or a horse’s tail
- They eat humans and corpses
- They inhabit distant dark lands, caves, swamps, and similar places
- They desecrate graves
In one folktale, a brother and sister become lost in a forest and encounter a one-eyed old female Psoglav, who urges them to eat a human arm. While they hesitate, her sons return home and attempt to eat the children instead. The siblings ultimately escape by tricking the monsters.
The same study suggests that the medieval South Slavic versions of the Alexander Romance may also have served as an important route through which stories of dog-headed beings spread.
In border regions, terms referring to dog-headed creatures were also used to describe people on the Ottoman side of the frontier and other perceived outsiders.
Etymology
Psoglav / pasoglavac is a South Slavic term meaning “dog-headed.”
Forms vary by region and language, including psoglav, pasoglavac, and the plural pasoglavci.
