This article provides an overview of The Blood of Dawnwalker based on actual gameplay, supplemented by information revealed before release.
Official announcements are treated as the primary sources, followed by information reported in hands-on previews as secondary sources.
You Have 30 Days to Save Coen’s Family
One of the game’s main objectives is to save Coen’s family within 30 days.
Once the prologue ends, a countdown spanning 30 days and 30 nights begins.
Failing to accomplish this objective within the time limit does not result in an immediate game over. Instead, the failure will have consequences, and the game will continue.
Taken together, the official statements suggest that the game is not designed to let you complete absolutely everything in a single playthrough. However, it appears to have been balanced so that you can experience most of its content in one run.

How Time Advances
Each day gives you eight units of action time during the day and another eight at night. Time advances when you perform the following actions:
- Starting certain quests
- Progressing certain quests
- Completing certain quests
- Accomplishing certain objectives
- Choosing certain dialogue or quest options
- Unlocking certain skills
Before you take any of these actions, the exact number of time units it will consume is always clearly indicated by an hourglass icon.
To answer a common question in advance, fast travel does not cause time to pass.
Likewise, no matter how long you spend exploring the open world, no in-game time will pass whatsoever.
Put very simply, the two main things you need to consider when managing time are which choices you make during quests and which skills you unlock.
Time therefore functions as a resource for character progression and quest advancement.
The fact that open-world exploration does not cause time to pass has been emphasized several times in official announcements. This reflects the developers’ consistent design philosophy of “not imposing a time limit on free open-world exploration.”
Time as a Gameplay Resource
An hourglass icon appears before actions that consume time, allowing you to check in advance how far the clock will move forward.
Creative Director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz describes the system as follows:
Time works more like a currency than a countdown.

Considering that learning certain skills also advances time, it seems reasonable to view time as a gameplay resource designed to create meaningful trade-offs.
Official Answers to Common Questions
Does This Mean You Can’t Take Your Time Exploring Dungeons?
No.
Time advances in response to specific triggers, such as starting or progressing certain quests. It is not tied to the passage of real-world time.
One official explanation illustrates this by saying that even if you spend hours watching a burning house, it will simply continue burning.

Is It Game Over After 30 Days?
No.
Failing to achieve the objective of saving Coen’s family will have consequences, but the game itself will continue beyond the 30-day limit.

If The Blood of Dawnwalker Is Your Kind of RPG
If you are drawn to The Blood of Dawnwalker for its medieval Eastern European dark fantasy, morally gray quests, and emphasis on player choice, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the most natural recommendation.
Dawnwalker director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz also directed The Witcher 3, while several other members of Rebel Wolves previously worked on the game. The connection runs deeper than a shared setting: The Witcher 3 regularly confronts players with flawed choices, consequences that are not immediately apparent, and quests with no cleanly correct outcome.
The two games have different worlds and combat systems, but The Witcher 3 remains the clearest way to experience the RPG design lineage behind The Blood of Dawnwalker.
